I'm hoping I could get some help. I'm trying to figure out what class I would be racing in out at the SDKA races @ Qualcomm. My uncle picked up an Arrow chassis with a KT100 Yamaha engine with expansion chamber and I will probably be driving. I'm 30 years old and haven't ever raced karts. I have no problem racing a novice/rookie/beginner class. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome! You'd fall into Formula Y/C Heavy. You'll need a wet clutch if it doesn't have one on there already. Where did the chassis come from?

exspansion chamber (looks like a can with holes in it?) or does it have a pipe, pipe=formula y/c ,can=super sportsman(a dead class)

If your Yamaha KT100 has a "can" and not a pipe that is okay (as long as you're not concerned with running for Championship points). There may not be a Sportsman or Super Sportsman Championship class but you can still come out and run with SDKA. You would be grid on track behind the Formula YC Heavy drivers. You wouldn't be alone ... there are two other Super Sportsman drivers that will be running at some of the races this year (not all but some of the races).
See you at the track.

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure it's a pipe that we have. Not the can. Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by a "wet clutch?" Is it a hydraulic clutch of some kind?

A wet clutch has a cover on it to hold clutch oil (the clutch discs, etc are in an 'oil bath'). A dry clutch does not have a cover and does not use clutch oil. Both are multi-disk centrifugal clutches. Some classes require wet clutches and some allow or require dry clutches. The Formula YC Heavy class requires a wet clutch with (I believe) a minimum of 3-disks and 6-springs. Super Sporstman allows wet or dry clutches. I'll have access to the specific IKF clutch rule on Wednesday at the Board meeting and will post an update if necessary. Check out the link below. The top clutch (Steel Nytro) is a wet clutch. The second clutch (HDC-5) is a dry clutch. www.horstmanclutches.com/index.php?page=clutches

I'm pretty sure a 4 spring wet clutch is ok to run too. As long as you have 3 discs and it is one of the approved clutches. Jeff will update as he mentioned. There has been lots of discussion recently about Formula YC on the forum, check it out. Any additional questions will get you some more feedback. Hey, I was 50 and never raced before, you'll be fine. There is work involved, lots to learn, but it's a great time. Good people, good competition, and a whole lot of fun.

John, the clutch you have is an L&T 4 spring clutch and yes it is a wet clutch, your uncle had bought the kart from me and the pipe you have is the correct one for running the formula y/c class. If the 4 spring doesnt work to your likings I also have a 6 spring L&T still at the house. Tell Mike that if he needs to know anything to see me here at work and I can give him information. I hope you enjoy driving the kart its real fun. If your at the races look for me at my brother in laws trailer #54 shifter

Thanks Jim. I think I'm going to try and get out for the race on the 19th. I just sent Mike an Email to see if he's going to be able to do that. I know he's having surgery soon but I don't know when.

One more quick question. I know that neck rolls are required, would a Leatt Brace be allowed?

One more quick question ... would a Leatt Brace be allowed? Hi Jon, Yes the Leatt Brace is allowed. I use one and I've seen quite a few other people with one. Jeff Shadoan SDKA V.P.

Jon, I hope you will be able to make it out to the race, unfortunately I wont be able to be there since the race is on a Saturday and I have to work. However If you do go I'm sure the other racers there like Mike Campbell and Geary Launder can give you a few pointers, on the other hand if your motor doesn't work out for you I have a new style KT100 that I had used on that kart and the motor is for sale. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on the kart. Jim 619 922-5725
