Effective immediately air boxes will be required on all junior and senior karts including shifters. This is a noise reduction measure.
Following is the official updated Policy 100.2.4 including the specs for legal air boxes. Unapproved (non-spec) air boxes will not be permitted.
4). Use of Air Boxes: Air Boxes (Induction Silencers) are required on all karts in all S.D.K.A. events. Air Boxes shall conform to I.K.F. Rule 603.1.4. except for Shifters and TaG-USA, as follows:
a. Stock 125cc Light and Heavy, Open 125cc (Moto and ICC), and 80cc: Air Boxes shall be in stock form with NO MODIFICATIONS to the box or the inlet tubes. Air Boxes may have up to three (3) inlet tubes, each not to exceed 30mm inside diameter and 95mm minimum length. Approved Air Boxes are limited to CIK approved and RLV.
b. TaG-USA – Senior & Heavy: Open but must be CIK or RLV approved with two (2) inlet tubes not to exceed 22.0mm (±1.0mm) inside diameter and 95.0mm minimum length. The 2004 CIK KG and Freeline Air Boxes are NOT legal.
Edit: Kid karts are excluded ... see note below.

Good question! We'll be certain to clarify this in the 2009 rules.
No, air boxes will not be required for Kid Karts. The IKF class specs list the K&N #RC-1250 or equivalent as the only approved air filter. Also, the boot on the typical 100cc air box is larger than the Comer C51 carburetor. It likely could be made to fit but with little benefit. The Comer motor is already one of the most quiet at the track.
So, no air box requirement for Kid Karts.

I've tried an airbox + filter on the TM K9, it does not work. I don't think it is reasonable to run unfiltered at Qualcomm, too much junk flying around. How about no airbox as long as not loader than 125 Moto?
