This is an extract from one of Jeff Shadoan's posts on gearing. Good advice.
"I run a Rotax so I'm not sure what the Leopard guys will be running. 11t is the correct drive gear ... just unsure about the rear sprocket. If none of the Leopard guys are able to reply before Sunday I would recommend just leaving rear sprocket off the kart because you can find out first thing Sunday morning at the track. All the guys are very helpful and will get you in the ballpark with your gearing. It will probably be in the neighborhood of 11/79 to 11/83. You should probably make sure to have sprockets from 78 through 84 for racing at Qualcomm."
In other words, it depends.....................on your style, the track layout, track conditions and so on. It pays to be flexible.
As far as TAG goes, the gear will dictate revs....which dictates reliability. For the West course, anything in the 76 to 82 range has been run by the TAG drivers I know.
Welcome to the FUN..........will look for you Saturday!

We look forward to having you race with SDKA this Saturday. Don beat me to the reply What motor are you running? The above info is for a Leopard. If you have a Rotax you'll want a 13 tooth drive gear and 80-84 rear sprocket depending on if you are racing in the TaG Senior (light) class or the TaG Masters (heavy) class. The age requirement for Masters is 35+ or 200 lbs with all driving gear if under 35 years. What kind of chassis do you have? What number will you be running? If unsure about number availability check the championship results on the web site (you'll want to make sure your number isn't already in use by another driver in the TaG classes). Introduce yourself around at the track and don't be afraid to ask questions. See you Saturday.

I don't know how much info you've already been provided so here are some key points relating to 4-stroke TaG: - You can definitely run your 4-stroke kart in the SDKA TaG group.
- However, 4-stroke TaG motors are no longer legal in any of the current TaG rules (IKF, TaG USA, SKUSA). SDKA follows IKF TaG rules so SDKA race/championship points can not be awarded.
- Minimum weight (kart + driver) will be one of the following depending on which 4-stroke motor:
- Biland = 380 lbs (TaG Senior) or 410 lbs (TaG Masters) - ORAL, Tech 1, or Vampire = 400 (TaG Senior) or 430 (TaG Masters)
- Front brakes are not legal. They can be on the kart but not functional (disconnected from the system in some manner).
The legal tires for SDKA TaG are: Maxxis MH, Maxxis HG3, Bridgestone YHC, Burris B44 and B55. Regarding chain length. You don't need a different length chain for every rear sprocket size but you will need 2-3 different lengths. One length is typically good for 3 sprocket sizes on average. Also, if you haven't done so already I would recommend downloading the "Pre-Race Tech Sheet" and the "Bylaws & Policies" from the SDKA web site Home page. Having everything up to spec before race day will make your race day much more relaxing and enjoyable. See you Saturday. Jeff SDKA - V.P.
