I just attended a skip barbar racing school program where i drove open wheel cars on laguna seca raceway. Was incredibly fun and made me realize that i wanted to pursue a carrer in some type of racing. I was told that the easiest way to do this was karting (or most affordable haha). What is the best way to start doing this??What do i need? Is san diego a good place for karting competitivly?

So i would say that san diego is not the most conpetove for karting, but the cheapest class to run would be hpv4 or formula y/c...look for a used kart to buy, but come down and check out the next race before you do...this sat...any questions-kart#83 hpv4

Hi Nick, Welcome to SDKA. A few questions to better steer you in the right direction:
How old are you? Where do you live? When do you plan on getting started karting? Do you have a budget in mind?
You want to begin in a class where you learn how to drive smooth so rule out shifters. Rotax and HPV are good options because they are run at most of the Southern CA clubs giving you a variety of places to race.
Look me up this Saturday at Qualcomm stadium ... #66 Arrow Shifter kart. Or you can give me a call ... cell number is below.
I can possibly help you into a kart or help you in your search. I've been racing karts for 7 years. Started in Yamaha Sportsman then moved to Rotax and TaG the past couple years and now I'm racing Shifters.
I've worked with 5 new karters the last couple years. A couple of them will be at Qualcomm this Saturday.

Nick,
> I just attended a skip barbar racing school program where i > drove open wheel cars on laguna seca raceway.
Sweet.
> Was incredibly fun and made me realize that i wanted to pursue a > carrer in some type of racing.
Go for it. Keep in mind you need more than talent though - there are tons of great drivers who haven't been able to make racing their career, for want of good business sense and salesmanship.
> I was told that the easiest way to do this was karting
I think you were told correctly. Almost everything learned in a kart will apply directly to the cars, in particular the racecraft.
> What is the best way to start doing this??
Talk to people already doing it. Without the help of the people in the club, we probably wouldn't have made it past the first year.
> What do i need?
You have what you need to start; interest and desire. I'd take Jeff Shadoan up on his offer and give him a call, then stop and talk to everyone you see this Saturday at Qualcomm.
> Is san diego a good place for karting competitivly?
It depends on the class you choose, but there are lots of great drivers in the club.
See you on Saturday.

This is my first year racing and my best advice I can give you is to come down to an SDKA race and get as familiar with things as possible. Walk around and ask any questions that are on your mind. Everyone is friendly and very willing to help out. My first time coming down to Qualcomm to watch the action was really fun and only pushed me even more to get a kart and start racing.

Nick, here is a link to the schedule for this Saturdays race: www.sdka.com/QualcommWestReverseSeptember062008.pdfIf you are just coming to see the actual races, I would arrive around 11:45 or so, because the first Senor race (TaG and Rotax) of the first heat starts at 11:54 as you'll see on the schedule. The race day itself starts at 7:00am with registration and goes till about 5:00. See you there! -Kyle Wright (HPV-4, Top Kart #47)
