Before you invest in a kart, I would strongly suggest that you spend a Saturday morning at Miramar Speedway. This is an indoor facility and not a "real track", but it will give you a good idea whether or not your 11 year old driver has the "right stuff" for karting. Some kids hit the throttle the first time and are rather intimidated by the response, and driving in a pack with other racers is no fun at all for some youngsters.
If he shows promise there, then take a trip up to Perris for a driving session at Apex Raceway. This is a real track, with instruction available to again help you determine if your prospective driver has the huevos to drive in this sport (it's not as easy as it may look).
If all systems are still "go", then it's time to determine what class to race in and go find a kart. Since he is 11, he may have one or two years available in either Junior 1 or HPV1 depending on his birth date. After that, it looks like HPV 2 is the next step.
Come to the race next Saturday (the 6th), look around, and talk to the Dad/driver teams. Everyone will be more than happy to answer your questions.
