Do you all tune your own engines or do you have them professionally tuned at a shop in the area? The only reason I ask is that I am looking to get an engine tuned but dont have the know how to tune it myself and would be happy to pay to have it professionally tuned. If you do take it somewhere to have it tuned, is there a place you would recommend I take my engine?

What kind of engine do you have? Various people in the club use different tuners for different motor types.

John,
We are very fortunate to have overnight-shipping access to a number of national-class motor shops in SoCal - Doug Fleming (www.flemingmotorsports.com), Terry Nash (Nash's Karting), Pitts Performance, and HiRev Engineering are all regular top finishers at the IKF and STARS races. Right now we do not have any comparable shops in San Diego (that I know of).
You will want to have major work performed by an experienced shop, but the track-side tuning is really something you should learn on your own. As someone else asked, what motor/class are you running? In the club, we have many people who have run years in the shifter, TAG, HPV, and Formula Y classes, and we will all be happy to help out with basic setup and tuning. However, you will soon learn that the specific setup that works for my motor may not be optimal for your motor - this gets very carb-specific. That's where your own experience and experimenting will come in to play.
Thanks, Doug Ring - TAG Sr. #8
