We used a set of once raced YHC's as our baseline and Nick as my test driver (since he is much more consistent than I am). Once we had the kart to where it was comfortable, we ran two sessions on the YHC's of 14-15 laps each. His best time was 45.22 and ran most laps (when clear of traffic) in the 45.30's. Next we put the B55's on. These were new. In the first session his best lap was a 45.19 and again he was in the high 45.20's most of the time. Second session on the B55's he ran a best lap of 44.91 and was consistently around the 45 flat time. Fifth session we went to a set of new B44's. His best lap was a 44.94 and the times were very similar to the 55's. He said that the overall feel to all of the tires was the same. He said that he had absolutely no handling issues with any of the tires. We ran out of daylight and they shut the track down before we could get a second session in on the 44's, but from the results of the first session, I would not have expected to see anything dramatically different.
There are a few things to keep in mind when picking apart these results. First is that we tested at Apex rather than the parking lot at the stadium where we have been having the wear problem. Second is that we didn't get to go on the track at Perris until they were done with their morning kart school. It was 1:30 before we hit the track and it was low 80's. By the time we did the last session, the temperature had dropped nearly 20 degrees. Whether the warmer track temps would have resulted in better lap times...I don't know. But, overall I'd say that there was no difference between the tires. If any, I'd give the edge to the harder compound B55's. We talked on the way back and we are going to at least start the season on Burris tires.
