Thinking about getting into this sport, but wanted to get a better idea of total cost of getting into the game.
What do you estimate as start up cost for:
1) decent used kart 2) clothing 3) tools, maintenance equipment
What do you estimate as regular expense for
1) association fees 2) other regular replacement item costs
Other cost considerations?
thanks

Hi jon,
I am just starting karting but I will share with you what I have had to pay for so far.
Decent used karts vary according to what type of kart (class) you want. Most people start with HPV's or Yamaha KT-100 powered karts which can be had for under $3000.
All the karting gear can set you back up to $700 in total to be on the safe side.
Other items like tools will cost a several hundred for a kart stand and tools to work on the actual kart. Maintenance can vary too depending on youir budget and how fast you want to go (engine rebuilds)

its really hard to give you a price on what you would be looking at due to not knowing what class you are interested in. I know that if you get into ,lets say a formula y/c heavy class it could cost up to $5000.00 depends on what you need for the kart. Then you have a membership fee, race fees, gas fees...

$10K the first year if you buy a used kart.
$10K the second year because you'll want a new kart.

Jon:
We will be at the next SDKA race at Qualcomm. Just look for the big Eagle One tent or the HiTech flag. We will be bringing lots of information for new karters as well as some ideas to help you into karting for a lot less then the $10,000 mentioned here.
Our main driver coach, Jonathan Wright has been a factory driver for Haase, CRG and Tony Kart running ICC's and ICA in the Stars series and beyond. Jonathan started his career right here in San Diego running with SDKA on a used TonyKart we bought from Peter at Go-Karting in Vista and a tired beat up HPV. We showed up at our first race and couldn't even get on track because we couldn't pass tech. Tom Levenberg at Lap Tech spent a Saturday in his garage getting our kart ready just so we could get on the track. From there it all began. Jonathan has experienced both the very best and the very worst karting has to offer and has decided to come back home to help others get started in the sport he loves. There are very few around with the complete experiences Jonathan has.
Give him a call at the shop in lakeside at 619-670-0754 or on his cell 619-322-2967. You can always just come by for a chat and a burger at Qualcomm. There are lots of questions when you first start and not a lot of answers. San Diego is our home, it's time for us to give back to those that gave so much to us and helping new karters is the path we have chosen.

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. I'm definitely in this for the fun, and would be interested in the "recreational" "senior" class. From what I gather, that appears to be the formula y/c heavy class. In addition to the schedule races at the Q, are there regular practice times as well?
$10k sounds pretty steep.
I will stop by for a visit to Eagle One as suggested. I'm in No. County (San Marcos), so I'll also stop by Go-karting in Vista (I think that's the shop next to the Trek store).
Thanks for any other suggestions.

Jon,
If you are looking at the Formula Y I have my package from last year for sale. Julio was interested in it too. I can send you the details if you think you are interested. It's an '05 Margay Brava 1.6 Limo. I was class champion in it last season. I am offering it with 3 different engine packages, so send me an email and I can send you the details along with a few pics.

Jon, You should be able to buy a used kart and the main tools and stands you need to compete, along with that you should be able to get a membership, fuel, tires, misc. parts, raceday entrys and run competitive in a SDKA season for between 7,000.00 - 8000.00 with no problem. But it is an addiction so you need to surround yourself with the people that will steer you the right way so you don't get some bad stuff, meaning wasting money on things that make things seem easy but won't pay themselves off. Good Luck and I know you will enjoy.
