I am getting into karting and found a good deal on a nice used kart, bought a simple trailer to transport it, and now just need safety equipment such as a helmet, rib/chest protection, neck collar, and suit. Since I have no idea which products will fit the best, etc I want to try on these types of items before I buy. I have not found a brick and mortar store in the San Diego area that carries a decent selection of these types of items so I can do some comparison shopping.
Does any one have any suggestions? sdka@robertpainter.info

Robert, Two more suggestions for you. 1) K1Speed Indoor Kart Racing in Carlsbad carries a full line of safety equiptment and drivers wear at excellent prices. Also, you can drive while you are there. It is much fun. Check out www.k1speed.com or www.k1racegear.com2) Daves Performance Karting in Temecula carries both Sparco and Shift gear as well as Birel. Call Tom Levenberg (LapTech) 858-259-8324. He's got some great deals on suits, gloves, shoes, etc.; and you can try on what he has. Dave Turner's Motorsports & Race Shop carries several makes of helmets you may try on; 858-571-3811.

You could also go to Horstman in Vista, just another place to shop and check prices. I'm not sure of the rules, but you should check into the helmet regulations. As far as I know you will need at least a Snell 2000 rated helmet. If the requirements for 2006, or soon after, will be a Snell 2005 rated helmet, you should make sure that you buy the newest model so you won't have to buy another one for the next couple of years. Thanks to all for the information. To answer the quesiton posed by Jeff S, I am not planning to immediately join a club. Instead I will be practicing at Moran until I feel comfortable in the kart, and fast enough to try my hand at racing.

Dont be afraid to jump in. Im 58 and started last year at 57 years old, never having been in one. Practiced once and went racing with SDKA. You start at the back of the field the first 3 races and can start back there longer if you want.(I did). Its good hands on experience and everyone is more than willing to help you which helps your learning curve. Just plan on having fun and not worrying about where you place. Hold your lines and the faster people will get around you if they need to.

Ditto what Ed said. I started mid-season 3 years ago having never raced before. I was 43 at the time. Never have I had so much fun and like Ed said, all of us there are willing to help in any way we can. We were all rookies at one time, starting at the back, learning the lines and trying to get faster with every trip to the track. I'd strongly suggest that you get into the club and race. And if you can afford it, do the practices too. There is no substitution for seat time.

Robert,
Do not hesitate to join a club. There is a wealth of knowledge, help and support at club level racing. It is the best thing someone starting out can do.

K1 Racegear (k1racegear.com) has an excellent assortment of racing apparel. Basically everything you need in one place.
Stand 21 has also an amazing line of equipment. There driving suits and helmets are the best I've ever seen.
Either way you go, both brands are an amazing choice.
