Well, I'm not actually a NOOB since I've belonged to and raced with the SDKA several years ago (KT100 Senior Sportsman - Amago/El Cajon). I've decided to get back into the sport and I see that the TaG class is the way to go (I was considering a shifter, but after a lot of research, I'm going TaG). My questions are these: 1.) are front brakes allowed in any of the TaG classes?? 2.) Since there is no longer a ROTAX Class, should I still consider a ROTAX engine or just go with the more frequently used Parilla?? 3.) I'd like a NEW kart, but finances will force me to buy a used one. I am going to look at two that are listed in the SDKA classifies this Sunday. I see that there are several races at Moran and possibly Parris this year. Are there club members who "buddy up" and attend these races together sharing expenses (i.e. someone who has a vehicle that can carry more than one kart and support equipment)?? 4.) Any recommendations/limitations as to how old of a kart should be considered?? Sorry for the long post, but I certainly will appreciate all the responses and info that the club members post!! Hoping to be on the track with you folks in a few weeks. THANKS!!

Hey NOOB, I will be racing the TAG heavy class next season in my Rotax powered kart. There are still quite a few of us that will. I like the Rotax. Easy to work on. Don't know much about the Leopard. Also, I will be selling my KRT kart with Rotax engine or without if interested. Upgrading this year. I too wanted an inexpensive kart to start with. It's still a great kart and if you would like to see it, let me know.

According to 2007 TAG rules, front brake is only permitted in Heavy class. As far as "buddy up" this is my first year and I would be interested, I think it would be a great idea to pit together and help each other.

The Leopard and Rotax where the two most popular engines in last years TaG class. Frank Powell who won the TaG points championship in 2006 used a Rotax and Eric Kinninger who took 2nd used the Leopard. The benifit of using one of these engines is that their are better odds of someone having a spare part you may need vs. a less popular engine. It also makes it much easier as you are learning to tune the engine and your looking for some advice. The one question I wish I would have asked prior to purchasing my Leopard was, "does the driver weight make a difference when making a engine purchase"? Although the leopard is a great engine package (as I am sure the Rotax is too) last year I averaged 10-15 pounds over the minimum weight every race, even with sucking air around the last few corners. With the Leopard package droping another 10 pounds in 2007 for the Senior class forces me to run in the Heavy class. If I had known then what I know now I would have purchased the Biland or Sonik motor so I could run the Senior Class in 2007. I copied and posted the engine/weight from another board about the TaGUSA weight rules.
2007 weights: Engine.............................. WKA TaG.. TaG Sr..... TaG Mstr... TaG Hvy Biland Stealth ................... n/a lbs.... 390 lbs..... 420 lbs..... 435 lbs Comer.............................. 385........ 390........... 420.......... 435 Motori Seven...................... n/a......... 370.......... 400.......... 415 Parilla Leopard................... 355......... 360.......... 390.......... 405 PRD fireball......................... 355........ 360.......... 390.......... 405 Rotax FR125........................ 350........ 370.......... 400.......... 415 Sonik TX125........................ 385........ 390.......... 420.......... 435 Vortex Rok.......................... 355........ 360.......... 390.......... 405 ATK....................................................390...........400...........415 PCR....................................................400...........400...........415 CRS 125.............................................390...........420............435 Super ROK...........................................................................440
I am pretty sure this is what the club will be posting when they announce the 2007 rules. We will be using "TaG Sr"and "TaG Hvy". This may not be 100% accurate but will give you a general idea of the difference of weight to engine.
