I live in San Diego and have 9 and 13 year old sons. They both have an interest in Kart racing. How can I get them started, learn more about classing them, what/where to buy Karts, required equipment, etc., etc., etc.? All feedback will be helpful. Thanks, Stu Frederick Del Mar

Stu,
Thats great that your kids are interested in kart racing, it really is alottttt of fun and will also help them be better drivers when its time for them to get a license. First off i would recommend bringing them to our next race at Cajon speedway on Sept. 12th, we'll be there all day. Ask alot of questions- everyone there is helpful and nice. As for getting some seat time, i would recommend going up to Moran raceway- great facility and learning. After your kids are addicted after that they should call Tom @ 858-259-8324. He will be able to get karts for you, or you could look in classifieds on ekarting news. Tom is helpful and always there on raceday. Hope to see you on sunday.. Greg

Best bet is come out Sunday, Sept 12th to El Cajon Speedway(entrance on the back side of the track) and see the kids that are racing, talk to the racers, club officials and get all the info you want. Also another source of a new or used kart might be Marc at Kart Racing Technologies in Carlsbad, he builds and sells them and several of us use his karts. His phone is 760-804-9087. He is at races alot so keep trying and leave him a message.

If you want you kids to get some seat time, and to be sure they REALLY want to race, take them to Miramar Indoor Speed Circuit. Its a nice facility and the karts are pretty fun to drive. I took my girlfriend down there and we had a blast!
Its just a sugjestion to see if your kids are really interested. I can almost be certain that once they try it, they are hooked!

My son is 8 and interested in racing karts...how do I get info on classes, equipment and any fees. ? If anyone has any information that would be great!!! He's been riding his Honda 50 for over a year now and loves it...he also plays a different variety of sports. His father and I thought we'd try something new. We're close to the Cajon Speedway, but it's closed now...so we're not too sure where to get any first timer info. Thank you!

Dont give up, were looking like we will race in the parking lot at Qualcom stadium next year, we have insurance approved and have requested dates from the stadium. We should know better about the dates by the end of November. Keep tuned to our forums and news site. Also look in our classified section of our web site. Some people have kids karts for sale. Also Peter B or the Whitts if you read this can you answer them and maybe help out. We have a monthly meeting at Cocos restaurant on Balboa in Kearney Mesa just west of 805 and east of Genesee Ave. Meetings start at 630, come by and people at that meeting can personally answer your questions. In the "contact us" section of our web site, Jerry Kaplan or Greg Marcum may be able to help you. Just call their numbers some week night or weekend. Good Luck.

Has your son tried the indoor kart racing? That's probably the first step. There is an outdoor track in Riverside County called Perris/Apex Racing near the fairgrounds. Dave has a program directed toward kids and training, but it is limited to his track. Your son would be in what is called the Junior 1 class for 8-12 year olds. It consists of an 80cc motor in a cadet chassis. If you have more questions, just direct them to this forum and I'll try to answer any you may have about this particular class. If your son is used to motorbike or motocross dirt track riding or racing, those individuals usually have an easy time transferring those skills to a go-kart track.

Otto got his start several years ago when the Miramar indoor track first opened. We would go when the were opening on Sunday mornings and they were able to give him some extra attention.
Then we switched to K1 in Carlsbad, took some lessons and competed in their junior F1 series.
Now Otto has his own kart, we waited until we were sure this was something he wanted to do. We got an inexpensive trailer to hang off the back of our Subaru.
Good luck!
