I'm interested in getting started in kart racing. I have no racing experience other than a few stints at a race school in a Formula Renault car.
I'm 30 years old and am 5'7" and weigh about 170 lbs.
Don't really know what class I should start in or what kind of kart.
I'm going to go to the race at Qualcomm on November 6th to check it out and see what the event is like.
If anyone has any suggestions on where I should start, please feel free to chime in.
Thanks.

Welcome to karting and SDKA. You'll want to start in the TAG class (touch-and-go). All engines are electric start 125cc; multiple brands/models are allowed. I would recommend a Rotax engine. Check out Bill Walsh's #4 KRT | Rotax kart. For a chassis you don't need or want to start with something brand new. But you also don't want something too old either ... it can be hard to find parts and many are worn out. The most important thing in buying used is finding something that has been well maintained and is still competitive.
Stop by my pit spot at the November race. I'm the #66 Tony Kart (green) and will be in the front row of the pits stalls. You'll find everybody at SDKA friendly and helpful.

Hey the next race is Nov 3rd, not the 6th.
Stop by my pit, #4 TaG kart, and I will show you my TAG setup.
Jeff is right, SDKA is a great place to start karting.

Jaw Industries, I have 2 shifters that I am going to be selling, If I can find the time to get off work I will be hopefully bringing them to the track on the 3rd for the race. Hoping the directors (Tom, Bill) will let me get some track time in to make sure I have them all ready to go. You are more than welcome to get in one if they are able to allow it. If you have any ?'s you can call me at 760-427-5555
