Well after a lot of research, I bought a used Rotax kart through eBay. It should arrive in a couple of days. Now I need to know about the required driver’s equipment. I have been riding sportbikes so I have gloves, helmet, etc. but I understand that there is a new helmet requirement that my helmet might not meet. Any suggestions on helmets, driving suits, shoes etc. would be appreciated.

mark,
congrats on the new purchase. What kind of chassis is it? As for drivers equipment-- for shoes you can get a pair of wrestling shoes or pay alot for racing shoes. Ive used wrestling shoes for two years and they have great feel. The helmet must be snell 2000 full faced. You will also need to get a ribvest and collar pad. The suit you can get from Tom Levenburg at 858-259-8324. He sells alot of stuff, he can help you w/ whatever else you need also.
For your kart, it needs to be able to pass tech, so make sure your kart has all the safety items also. Good luck and see you at the track next year.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the congrats. The chassis is 2003 CRG. Thanks as well on the equipment tips. The wrestling shoes was a surprise. The ribvest was not. My wife & I rented a couple of Leopards at Amago. It was a blast but I sure was sore for a while. I am looking at a DeepSeat to replace the stock one. Do you have any thoughts on this or something similar?
Regarding kart safety items, are there published rules/guidelines that I can follow?

Like Greg, Congrats on the purchase. I just started in May 04 at 57 years old with a new Rotax and am having a ball. I may have seen you and you wife at Amago if it was about 3 months ago, I was practicing and a man and lady rented karts that day. I believe the wife was faster(just kidding). Tom L. is a good source of equipment and repairs. A good e-mail source is accelerationkarting.com out of Vegas. They have good prices and usually get stuff to you in 3 days or less. As for safety rules, e mail Roland on our contact list and he can most likely help you, he does our tech.

mark,
when i started karting two years ago i started w/ a tillett seat and had alot of rib pain.. alottttttt! My next move was to a ribtect seat. It was the best move i ever made, now my ribs never hurt, i only get a bruise or two on my back.
re: kart safety items, you can look at our bylaws section, it should all be in there. basically anything involving steering and brakes has to be safety wired, hubs need have a set screw in them. if theres any other questoins just let us know.. get some practice in before the season starts..

Mark,
The Ribtect seats are very similar to the DeepSeat. I use a DeepSeat and I love it, I would never go back to the smaller seats.
What part of San Diego do you live in?
As far as getting your kart up to speed in terms of safety, most of us here would be more than happy to meet up with you and give you some advice on safety wiring etc.....

Hi Ed , No, that wasn’t me and my wife at Amago 3 months ago (I was way faster than her ). It was more like 10 months ago. Thanks for the tips on Tom, Roland and the Vegas source for stuff. Hi Greg (I see that we have TEXT here), After learning a bit more about seats I am definitely going with Ribtech or DeepSeat. Not sure about the size though. I am also in the hunt for support stuff like stands, spare parts, special tools, front-end alignment tool, trailer, etc. If you know of someone possibly getting out of karting that wants to sell off their stuff, I would appreciate knowing about it. I live in Ramona by Mt. Woodson golf course but not in the course neighborhood. We live on a piece of property that would be kind of fun to put a private track on. I am sure the neighbors would love that!! I appreciate the offer of help and welcome any advice I can get. A friend where I work was big into karts and SDKA several years ago. His name is Norm Mansour. It was a while ago so I don’t if you know him. Norm also offered to help me get set up. I had planned to go with my friend to Amago but it seems that Amago dropped off the radar screen. Do you know if they still allow practice? If not, is there another option close by? I also see that there is some interest in putting in a track at Barrona. I don’t have any influence there but being close by, I would be happy to offer any help that I can. Mark

Mark, A couple of us are going to Moran Raceway this Sunday for some testing and fun. www.moranraceway.com This is by far the best track in Southern California. Bring the kart out and join us…I’ll be more then happy to assist in any tech issues at the track and answer as many questions as possible. Ebay is also a great source for used kart parts and accessories. Just type in KART in the ebay search engine and get your wallet out. For the new stuff www.accelerationracing.com has no sales tax and very fast shipping. Hope to see you Sunday, Brian Felix #14 Rotax Max

Brian,
Thanks for the info & offer but it looks like I won’t make it to the track. The good news is that my kart arrived yesterday. The bad news is that it looks like it’s going to need some work. The guy that sold it to me really misrepresented this in his advertisement (long story). The worst news is that it arrived without a passport. His advertisement stated that the kart would come with one and I asked him specifically to verify that he had it, which he said that he did. So the whole thing is on hold until I can get this resolved.

That is bad news Mark. I was talking to another SDKA member last night and he is having the same problem. He mentioned that if you contact SSC Racing (Rotax U.S. Importer) and give them the engine number they can check it out and send you a new passport. Here is the phone number (888) SSC-KART or (760) 864-1320.
Good Luck, Brian Felix

I have another question.... It's wierd I read all my old posts and turns out I did nothing as I thought I would. I picked up a used Birel R31 with Rotax.
So now here's the bigger question. I dont suck at karting but I am still learning, and I would LOVE to start some wheel to wheel action, but I dont want to hold up the field. Does SDKA have a novice thing or are there a decent amount of newbies on the track so I'm not the only one holding up the group? I might be decent at practice laps, but I just know that wheel to wheel is a whole different animal, and I've got a bit to learn on how to pass and so on.
So I just want to make sure if I show up for a race day, I'm not causing a major obstruction to others in the field.

Get out there with us and race. We have 2 new Rotax drivers this year, and I started last year never having raced. We put a X on the back of your helmet and kart and you are started at the back of the field for your first 3 races. If you just drive your race, hold your line, faster racers will get past you okay. I actually had them start me at the back of the field all season last year and the experience was good. I went from being lapped the my first 1 or 2 races to not being lapped and actually diceing with a couple racers by season end. Its fun thats what its all about. If you see yourself getting better it makes it more fun. Next race is Sunday 04/24 at El Cajon speedway, gates open at 7 am. We have a meeting next Thursday, 04/14/05 at Cocos Restaurant on Balboa Ave just east of Genessee Ave. All are welcome. Hope to see you out there
